A job and then a pension?

April 5 — May 29, 2024

For today's seniors, the concept of “work and then retirement” was the epitome of promise for their lifetime of toil. For many, work has meant a path to personal development, identity building and providing for a family. But it can also be a source of fatigue, stress and frustration. Retirement for the elderly can be a stage of rest, but also the search for new challenges and activities. They often take care of the family, many are engaged in all sorts of hobbies, but they also struggle with feelings of loneliness, loss of identity. Through this exhibition, seniors from the Elpida Educational and Cultural Center share a varied palette of their own experiences. In their paintings and texts, they reflect both memories of work and the realities of contemporary retirement life. They convey to us emotions, thoughts and attitudes about this important life topic. The concept of “work and then retirement” has undergone a transformation over time. Today's seniors perceive work and retirement comprehensively, knowing the pros and cons. Their experiences and reflections give us valuable material to reflect on the meaning of work and the period spent in retirement, in the present, and especially the future society. Clients of the Elpida Center viewed the subject even through the history of art, through a guided tour on the topic of work with educator Monika Švec Sybolová at the National Gallery Prague in the exhibition The End of the Black and White Age. The works were created in Elpida in the studio Kresby in collaboration with artist Eva Jiřička.

Exhibitors: Eva Aliapuliosová, Vanda Babická, Šárka Frýdová, Hana Mášová, Daniela Peterová, Marie Šeflová, Jitka Suchá, Jelena Usakovská, Ludmila Vondrkova, Tomáš Reinhard, Ilona Kučíková, Zdenka Linhartova, Jitka Majšnerová, Daniela Tužilova, Zdenka Vlasáková, Alena Zemanova, Blanka Kolaříkova, Gabriela Pechrová, Jitka Komarkova

KAFKAESQUE PRAGUE

June 3 — July 6, 2024

The Kafkaesque Prague project is designed in a modular way to offer a variety of options for different target groups. The basis is an entertaining popularization-educational video, with the help of which Kafka graduates from each and every educational outdoor family game, which humorously guides individuals and groups of all ages after 10 stops. These are related to Franz Kafka and his life in Prague, but also evoke the atmosphere of Prague at that time and motifs from his work. The map serves as a game plan, but also as a souvenir and inspirational material for further research. There's a more sophisticated app in the negotiations that would follow up on the game with augmented reality (AR) elements. We are considering an option so that the application can also be used outside Prague without depending on the physical space, or customize it and transfer it abroad. Ideally, an umbrella informative website should be created for the entire project for further use by schools and other interested parties. The individual partners have different prerequisites and have cultural heritage, space, network of contacts, technological and artistic know-how, which we want and can use for the successful implementation of the project.

Jana Najbrtová's Haiku focuses on the theme of water and fire and accompanies the cultural and community project of the Museum Plack, which ran from 17 September to 6 October 2024 in front of the Novomlýn Water Tower. At the same time, in the KP Gallery it is possible to see works by clients of the Elpida senior organization, which both visually and literally respond directly to specific elements of the surrounding outdoor space and at the same time deal with the theme of the Vltava River. Thus, their works create a dialogue between art, nature and society.
