MAPK - How much do city districts contribute to culture? Data from MAPK sheds light on cultural sector funding

How much public funding goes into culture? How does funding differ across various parts of the city, and which cultural sectors does it support?

Answers to these questions can be found in the MAPK application in the Funding section, which shows how Prague allocates financial resources for culture. MAPK makes data on municipal district spending accessible and allows it to be explored in a broader context.

How funding for culture is allocated

MAPK offers a basic overview of how much funding is directed toward the cultural sector in Prague and how these resources are distributed.

Users can track, for example:

Charts make it easy to quickly understand which areas of culture receive the most funding and where, conversely, there is room for further support.

Different sources and different needs

Cultural funding in Prague comes from multiple sources and takes various forms – from support for large institutions to smaller grants for independent projects. The cultural sector is highly diverse and individual types of organizations have different needs. While some institutions operate with long-term, stable support, others are more dependent on project-based funding. MAPK helps better understand the structure of the cultural sector and how it works.

Finance in the city context

At the same time, the data makes it possible to track how cultural funding differs across Prague.

In some city districts, it takes the form of larger investments and stronger institutional support, while elsewhere it focuses more on smaller local and community-oriented activities. MAPKa thus provides important context for thinking about the accessibility of culture and its further development.

Data as the foundation for transparent cultural policy

Charts illustrating the issue of funding contribute to greater transparency while providing a basis for more informed decision-making. They serve public administration, cultural organizations, and other stakeholders involved in developing the cultural environment in Prague.

Making data on cultural funding accessible is important not only for professionals and political representatives, but also for a broader understanding of how the city supports culture. The data comes from the State Treasury Monitor combined with accounting data from individual Prague city districts.
